About

The visual arts have been an important part of my life for many years.

After originally studying Fine Art (B.A.Hons) at Nottingham I later went on to study Creative Stitched Textiles (C & G).

I use sketches, photography and computer manipulation to record and develop my designs but usually choose textiles in final pieces as I feel this gives a more expressive, tactile quality to my work.

Much of my work is created with freehand machine embroidery but I choose the technique appropriate to each design.

Landscape and natural forms have always interested me and the colours, patterns and textures of the world around me are my main design sources.

I am currently working on details from photos and try to use techniques which represent not only the visual image but also the subject matter.

Working on images from the Hubble telescope I work free machine stitching across a ’void’ drawing together and interlocking threads to produce areas of colour. I then frame 3 layers together over a background of machine stitched and hand beaded wool felt.

For the Bubble Chamber pieces (Inspired by original images from CERN) I free machine stitch a silk noil background then hand stitch tiny beads to represent the bubbles which were created in the chamber and had been captured on the photo negatives.

My materials include hand-dyed fabrics, handmade felt, leather beads, metal and wood.

I enjoy teaching textile and design workshops to groups and individuals.

I have exhibited for many years, both individually and with Tangent Textiles. I have won a number of awards and been commissioned to contribute a project to Stitch magazine.
